How To Test The Purity Of Gold?
Gold, this one metal is popular with many people. Its value
tends to be stable and even increases. The height of the price makes a lot of
nature destroyed in the process of exploitation. Therefore, many people feel
the need to know how to test a gold whether it is pure or has been mixed with
other metals. In society, we often find practical ways to test the authenticity
of gold, for example by scraping it on a white wall. If the scratches look like
pencil strokes, then it's real gold. But ways like this tend to be
unscientific. This time I will tell you a simple scientific way to test the
authenticity of gold.
In physics, the concept of density is known. Specific mass is
a ratio (ratio) between the mass of a material and its volume. Materials whose
molecular structure is denser have a greater density than materials with a more
tenuous molecular structure. For example, rock density is greater than the
density of cotton, because stone molecules are denser than cotton molecules.
For the same volume, stones are heavier than cotton. For the same mass, cotton
is larger than stone.
Well. Specific mass is typical for certain materials. This
happens because each ingredient has specificities in terms of the density of
the molecules. Iron has its own density. Aluminum, water, gasoline, and
mercury, they also have their specific density values. Different materials,
different density values. So is gold. The mass of pure gold is 19,300 kg / m3.
So, the way to test the authenticity of gold is to measure its density. If a
jewelry has a mass of 19,300 kg / m3, it means pure gold. If the density of the
jewelry is not 19,300 kg / m3, it means not pure gold, maybe brass, or mixed
gold. The type of gold can also be expressed in other units, namely 19.3 g /
cm3.
Now the question, how to measure density?
As I said earlier, density is the ratio (ratio) between the
mass of material and its volume. The formula is density = mass per volume. Mass
measurement can be done easily, using electronic scales.
Volume measurement is carried out using a "liquid
rise" technique. The trick is to fill a measuring tube with enough water
and read the volume of the water first. Then enter the jewelry that we want to
measure the density. The presence of jewelry in the measuring tube makes the
water surface rise. The volume of jewelry is the same as the volume of water
that rises.
After getting the mass and volume, the density can also be
calculated using the formula described earlier.
Such is the way to test the purity of gold, namely the
concept of density. A fraudster can fake a metal so that it looks like pure
gold. However, he will never be able to change the mass of other metals so that
they are the same as the golden mass.
